Dr. Chirlmin Joo Receives HFSP Grant to ‘Weigh’ Single Proteins

Teacher of several courses of the Nanobiology programme, prof. Dr. Chirlmin Joo recently received a Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) grant in order to conduct research with the aim to identify the sequence of protein fragments by their masses. He aims to use graphene mass sensors developed by Dr. Sang Wook Lee of the Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea. This technique has the potential to identify masses at sub-Dalton precision. The ultimate aim of the three-year programme is to achieve sequencing of single full-length proteins, with the additional application of identifying post-translational modifications.
